Weekly Report September 20

YMGCR BOWLS CLUB

It’s been a long time, but we are finally getting back to our home club and we can’t wait to see all our mates. Had a bowl on Friday and it was so nice to bowl on our magnificent greens. Our club would like to take this time and thank our good friends at the Yarrawonga Bowls Club for all the support they have given our Victorian members. In these times it is so important for all our clubs in Yarra/Mulwala to support each other; so put your name down and play in each other’s social days.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  Wednesday bowls saw Steve Gann and one of our new bowlers in Colin Withers win, and two old stagers from Club Mulwala in Peter Humphreys and Malcolm Miller get the runners up. Sunday we had about twenty bowlers training under the watchful eye of Anne Miles and they did many different drills and a bit of practice in measuring and a talk on bowls etiquette from Laureen Smith.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  Last week one of our past players Billy Dicks turned ninety. He’s been a very good bowler for our club; one of his last games was back in 2012 when he skippered a rink in the B2 premiership team. He was a top all round sportsman; he played nine games for St Kilda in the VFL in the early 50’s, he later came to Yarra and captain/coached the pigeons in 1955 only to lose the preliminary final to Wangaratta. On a nice Saturday you can occasionally still see Billy come and support his club.

Now for a few important dates; Opening day will be on Sunday 18th of October (more information will be given later). We are still not certain if and when the pennant season will start but our club must be ready; so with the help of our two selection committees we will start training on Tuesdays and Saturdays at 1.00pm (both day’s will be for both midweek and weekend players). There will be a list for you to put your name down; this will be for the selectors to arrange teams for competitive practice. If you haven’t got your name down for pennant please do so; this will aid the selectors to start putting together the teams.
