Weekly Report November 20

YMGCR BOWLS CLUB

In Midweek the A1’s had the local derby against Yarrawonga at home and came away with a handy victory winning 12/65 to 2/55.  Best rink of the day was “JJ” Jones, “GG” Green, Ray Irvine and Sue Middleton who won 31/15.  YMGCR jumped out of the blocks to lead 10/1 after 4 ends.  It’s a disaster when you drop a 6 and that opened the gates and the Yarra rink won the next 2 ends to draw level.  For the next 6 ends it was shot for shot and then the YMGCR rink took total control and peeled off the next 7 ends to win.  Anne Miles rink was up against former team mate in Mick Szabo and in a tight game all day Anne prevailed to win 18/14.  Anne got a little lead early but Yarra came back to lead 8/4 after 9 ends.  There was never a great deal in it all day and with Anne getting 1’s on the last 2 ends…that was enough.  Laureen Smith’s rink was in trouble from the first end when they dropped a 5.  Things didn’t get any better when they dropped another 5.  1/10 down and looking down the barrel of a hiding the rink dug in to fight it out ……and that’s what they did.  They got back into the game and took the lead 14/11 on the 12th end.  BOY is bowls a funny game.  When you look in control and seem to be on top Yarra then fought back and won the next 7 ends and won 16/26.  Still sitting 2nd on the ladder.

The A2’s also had a home game against Corowa Civic and this was a game they had to win and they certainly delivered the goods with a crushing 14/78 to 0/38.  The 2’s had lost all their games by small margins and this was their time to make a move.  Brilliantly led by Bob Evans rink who just kept winning ends to lead 14/2 after 12 ends.  Then they reeled off the next 5 ends to lead 26/3 (good day at the office when you only lose 5 ends for the day) and they won 29/5.  Gary Presnell making his debut as a skip got off to a flyer getting a 4 on the first end, but Civic immediately game back and won the next 5 ends and it tool YMGCR to the 10th end to grab the lead.  They never surrendered it again and won 27/16.  Allan Goudge’s rink had a FANTASTIC start and had a 18/2 led after 13 ends (“RINK OF THE WEEK” was theirs for sure….or was it)?  They then dropped a 6 and Civic came back strongly but Goudgie hung on and won 22/17.

The A3’s were supposed to have played at Corowa Civic’s home track but due to the flood situation, the game was moved to our green and YMGCR came away with a 14/66 to 0/49 victory.  Ian Morffew’s rink continues on its winning way winning 27/15.  The rink seems to have a nice balance with 2 very old timers in Morf and Dougie McTier (both in their 90’s) and newbies Ian Febey and Denise Trubiano stepping up.  The rink was dominate but Ian wouldn’t been happy dropping 10 shots over 3 ends.  Pricey’s rink was in the fight all day and won 5 of the last 6 ends to win 19/15. Gavin Borwick’s rink got the job done again but got a big scare dropping a 4 on the last end to win 20/19.  This keeps them in touch with the 4.

“RINK OF THE WEEK” goes to Bob Evans, Shirley Hummel, Pam Dodman and Vicki Withers.

We had a number of players playing in the Victoria Open and on Friday, Anne Miles, Les Spencer, Sue Middleton, Vicki Withers and Laureen Smith were all winning of their sections but only Laureen made the next round.  The only other bit of success is Anne Miles who is in the last 64 of the Ladies Singles and her next round will be Tuesday morning….good luck ladies.

In some sad news past player Daryl Dighton passed away (suddenly) on Thursday morning and YMGCR Bowls Committee and players send our condolences to Pam and family.  His funeral will be next Friday at 2.00pm at Yarrawonga Mulwala Funerals in Ely Street.

Social bowls on Wednesday had 16 players and the winners were Robert Lidgerwood and Chris Horne with 2 wins and +19.  Runners up with also 2 wins were Les Wilson and Bill Jenkins but with only +7.  Jackpot failed to go off and the lucky number was won by Dougie McTier.

On Friday night the A2’s will be playing Corowa RSL at Corowa, starting at 6.00pm.  It would be great to see our club mates come and give us some support.
