Weekly Report May 14

YMGCR BOWLS CLUB

Wednesday Social Bowls: a field of 28 bowlers participated on the 10th of May for Wednesday social bowls. The winners were, in 1st place, Lynette Baxter and Darryl Kitchen with 2 games won and plus 25 shots, in 2nd place were Norm Windebank and Gavin Borwick with 2 games won and plus 11 shots, 3rd place was filled by the team of Ray Irvine and Frank Lieberg with 2 games won and plus 8 shots. The rolling Jackpot stood at $ 50.00 and did not go off. The Lucky number winners were Ray Irvine $20.00 and Bill Jenkins $10.00. Well done to all winners. There is plenty of room for additional bowlers on a Wednesday, and bowlers are encouraged to add their names to the Wednesday Social sheets at the bowls office. Visitors are most welcome.

Friday Social Bowls: 44 bowlers enjoyed the perfect conditions on Friday the 12th of May. Close bowls were on display across most rinks. One is reluctant to trot out the old bowls cliché ‘if you can’t bowl well on a day like this, then you can’t bowl’ but is has to be said that the green ran perfectly and there was hardly a breath of wind so conditions were ideal. Gary Presnell and Mal Beer were the 1st place winners on the day. 2nd place went to Ian Morffew and Frank Lieberg. Vicki Withers and Lynette Baxter filled 3rd place. Congratulations to all winners. Those that missed out on what was a wonderful day can enter next Friday’s game via the Friday Social Bowls sheets at the bowls office. Again, visitors are welcome.

The YMGCR Bowls Section AGM was held in the Willow Room at 7.00 pm on Monday the 8th of May. The meeting was well attended considering the chilly conditions.

We take pleasure in announcing that the office bearers for the Season 2023 / 2024 are:

President: Greg Fisher

Vice President: Gary Presnell

Secretary: Andy LeFevre

Assistant Secretary / Publicity Officer: Julian Jones

Treasurer: Shirley Hummel.

Greens Director: Ray Irvine

Committee Member: Vicki Withers

Saturday Selection Committee for 2023 / 2024: Andy LeFevre, Greg Green, Rob Hummel, Ian Morffew and Ian Price.

Midweek Selection Committee for 2023 / 2024: Ian Morffew, Rhonda Irvine, Allan Goudge, Liliana Borwick and Albert Dodman.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank those outgoing Office Bearers who made such a valuable contribution to the club during the 2022 / 2023 season. Those whom gave so generously of their time were Ray Brown, Ross Lloyd, Loraine Stone, Wayne Lowrie, Les Spencer and Laureen Smith.

VALE Ben Nowell: it is with deep regret that the President and Committee inform members of the passing of our esteemed Life Member Ben Nowell. Ben started as the YMGCR Golf Superintendent, a position which he held for many years. Ben was a Bowling Member for over 40 years and was a valuable contributor to the weekend pennant sides. Ben mainly played as a lead and was an asset to any rink in which he played. Ben had not enjoyed good health for the last few years, but he would still come down to the club for a roll. To his wife Myra and family we send our thoughts and condolences.

Looking forward to next week, we’ll be reporting on how YMGCR bowlers went who represented the Ovens and Murray Group Side in the friendly match held at East Shepparton against the Goulburn Valley Group side. Till then good bowling.
