YMGCR BOWLS CLUB
Weekend Pennant had the A1’s play Rutherglen away and won 16/84 to 2/63. The best rink of the day belonged to Michael Szabo who won 21/10 with the skip having an excellent day. Jimmy Lefevre’s rink had a good all round performance from the whole side and won 24/16. Scotty Widdison’s rink was solid again winning 25/17. Ryan Davies lost 14/20 and this still keeps them 2nd on the ladder.
A2’s travelled to Chiltern traditionally a trough road trip and it proved to be losing 2/61 to 16/85. The only bright spot for the day was the form of Robby Hummel’s rink who have not lost a game since they have come together and they won 22/17. Cat’s rink jumped out of the blocks but the Chiltern rink got themselves back in the game. Our boys fought it out but lost 15/22. Brown’s rink was always on the back foot. They couldn’t hold vital shots at crucial times and they lost 11/18. Rob “Pinkie” Lidgerwood lost 13/28, but we still sit top of the ladder. Next week we play 2nd side Myrtleford away. Win and we are guaranteed a top 2 finish.
The A4’s played 3rd place Wodonga at home and in a nail biter lost 2/73 to 16/78. Marie Whitehead’s rink had a day out and won 25/15. Doddy’s rink is always in the game and once again they were but lost just going down 15/17. Garry Hart skipped this week and his rink went down 16/20. Pricey lost 17/26. We sit 5th on the table only 14 points out of 4th spot. This side is very competitive and just need an ounce of luck and they could go all the way.
After last week’s win the B2’s played a top 4 side in Club Mulwala at home. YMGCR pushed them all the way and in an agonising finish came up one shot short losing 3/51 to 11/52. Terry Matthews rink once again put in a mighty effort and won 22/13. Billy Butterworth’s rink played an exciting draw 18/18 all and Noel Millar lost 11/21.
Midweek Pennant had the A1’s host Myrtleford at home and won 12/65 to 2/55. Best rink was Garry Sanders with an impressive win 23/12. Stuart McNeill had a battle all day winning 26/23 (he probably had other things on his mind as he is getting married this week…. all the best from all your club mates). Well, the great run of wins has finally come to a halt because Anne Miles has finally been beaten, losing 16/20. She has not lost a game of Midweek Pennant for nearly 2 years or more, but I’m sure she would have been only interested in the big scoreboard. They still sit on top of the ladder.
A2’s travelled to St James and won 12/69 to 2/58. We always have a tough battle because this small club is very competitive and are hard to beat on their tricky green. They are a massive hand full and to come away with the points is a bonus. Micky Vaughan’s rink took a few ends to sort out the green and came away winning 26/15. Ray Brown’s rink was always in front but lost a couple of ends in the end but still won 20/16. Allan Goudge jumped out of the blocks leading 7/0 after 2 ends. Then the momentum changed just as fast and they were in deep trouble, but to their credit they came back to lose 23/27. They still sit 2nd on the ladder and next week play top of the table leader in Corowa Civic at Civic…..must win !!!!
The A3’s had the beautiful road trip to Dederang (don’t think we have played them before) and after an 8 hour round trip came up with a gut wrenching defeat losing 2/65 to 12/67. Les Balfour’s rink were the stand outs winning 29/13. Danny McNeill had a close battle losing 20/26 and Rob Hummel lost 16/28. They are 6th on the ladder but only 2 points out of the 4. This makes the next couple of weeks vital.
Another tight game had the B1’s losing to Myrtleford 2/60 to 12/63 at home. Ross Lloyd’s rink are playing good bowls and won 31/15. Judy Goudge had a tough day losing 12/21 and Mary Essex ‘s rink lost 18/27. Maybe Mary was tired because she and her lead, one Barbie Verbunt thought they were playing at Myrtleford and had to catch an early bus …… anyway they beat the crowd and got a good car park.
In the State Over 60’s Men’s Singles held at Bendigo last week saw Garry Sanders playing for O&M but unfortunately he ran into a red hot opponent and lost in the first round. Garry also represented the O&M in the pairs with Wodonga’s Peter McLarty and they made it to the Semi Finals but they just lost.
In the Ladies Section we had Laureen Smith. She made it through to the quarter final (last 8) in the singles and with her pairs partner Clarie Sanders made it to the Semis (last 4). What a fantastic effort by our 3 team mates for getting there in the first place and going so deep into the tournament.
This week “RINK OF THE WEEK” goes to Les Balfour, Ian Morffew, Lyn Baxter and Sue Evans.
On Thursday the 10th of March we are having a BBQ starting at 5.00pm. This is for ALL pennant players (Midweek and Weekend). Please look for a list on the notice board and put your name down so Morf can work out his catering. It is just a small team bonding before we hit the finals.
It’s been pointed out that I have not put in my reports the results of the YMGCR Ladies Single Final. I’m sorry that this has happen but it was an honest mistake on my behalf. The game was played between Laureen Smith and Anne Miles. Anne jumped out to a strong lead and Laureen was in deep trouble, but Laureen got the mat and went long and dominated from that point on to win 25/16. Once again it was an honest mistake.
