YMGCR BOWLS CLUB
In the Midweek Pennant A1’s Qualifying Final against arch enemy Wangaratta, it all came down to the last 2 bowls with Wangaratta getting over the line 11/55 to 3/54. Anne Miles rink of Rhonda Irvine, Micky Vaughan and Claire Sanders all had great games and Anne got Wang’s top skip and once again got the better of him. Anne’s rink made their move on the 4th and 5th ends picking up two 3’s and moved to a 7/2 lead. They then got out to a 11/3 lead after 8 ends. From that point the scores were spread between both sides and on their last end of the game Wangaratta were 2 shots in front on the big board. After the seconds had finished Wang was holding 4 but YMGCR had the back bowls. Up to the mat stepped Claire Sanders and “BINGO” she picked up the jack and put it into the ditch with YMGCR then holding 4 and game. The pressure was then thrust onto the Wang skipper and boy did he step up, as he drew 2nd shot (great bowl). Anne tried to drive his bowl out but it was not meant to be, but she still had a fantastic victory 20/11. In a very high quality game Laureen Smith’s rink got a 1 on the last end to tie the game 18/18. Sue Middleton led beautifully all day and was well backed up by Shirley Hummel. The big boy “Cabbage” Spencer then played some big bowls when the rink needed them, and as for Laureen she also bowled beautifully. The game was close all day with no more than 3 shots in it. The jack was bruised from all the touchers from both sides and Laureen had to find a new spray….one of the best games of the year. Julian Jones rink was 5 down after 3 ends. They fought their way back into the game until they dropped a 5 and then trailed 5/13 after 8 ends. Things were not happening for them as a few wayward shots from the Wangaratta skipper went against them, and they went down 16/26. Next week YMGCR take on Kiewa at Chiltern and the winner will go on to play Wangaratta.
Our Weekend A1’s will play Wodonga at Corowa RSL in a replay of last year’s Grand Final. There will be an extra bus for supporters at a small cost. Come along and cheer for our club mates and hope we can go back to back.
