Weekly Report March 12

YMGCR BOWLS CLUB

Well, what a way to finish off the season.  The Midweek A1’s travelled to Wodonga and in another nail-biter went down 52/53 to Wangaratta.  To lose both Grand Finals in a week by 1 shot certainly hurts, but one thing is certain, we can be very proud of both our teams as they fought it out to the last bowl.

Julian Jones rink of Ray Irvine, Garry Sanders and Greg Green jumped out with a 5 on the first end. Wang came back to lead 8/12 after 12 ends, but YMGCR came back with a 4 to tie the game. Wangaratta then got a 5 shot lead with only 3 ends to go, but YMGCR then picked up a 4 to draw level and bring the side to within 6 on the main board.  Border won the last end to win 20/19.

Laureen Smith’s rink of Sue Middleton, Shirley Hummel and Les Spencer was in a tight game all day and after 12 ends the scores were 8 all.  YMGCR got out to a 4 shot lead after 15 ends but the Wang rink won the next 2 ends to regain the lead.  The last 2 ends saw the Wang skip play some fantastic bowls to wrestle the advantage back.  On the 20th end Spencer was holding shot about 4 inches from the jack, before the Wang skip changed hands and drew to within an inch.  With the scores level on the last end, YMGCR was holding 2 shots when the Wang skipper stepped onto the mat and cut 1 out, and then with his last bowl, took out our shot bowl and they picked up a 2 to win 16/14.

Anne Miles rink of Rhonda Irvine, Micky Vaughan and Claire Sanders got off to the perfect start to lead 5/0 after only 3 ends.  However, the Wang rink chipped away to take the lead 8/7 after 8 ends.  YMGCR then picked up a 5, but they then dropped the next 7 ends and trailed 18/12 after 16 ends. On the 19th end they grabbed a 4, (just at the same time as Julian Jones rink got his 4 and Smithy’s rink was holding a shot) and this made the difference on the big board only 2.  With Miles playing the last end she was 2 down on the head when she got onto the mat, and with her first bowl, squeezed in for shot.  With a look from every possible angle, the shot was decided….. but it was not meant to be, and the rink came away with a 20/20 draw.

Wednesday Social Bowls had 17 players and the winners on a count back were Vic Brincat and Noel Millar with one win and a draw from Bill Jenkins and Mike Klodinski.  Jackpot failed to go off and Don Tipping got the lucky number.
