YMGCR BOWLS CLUB
Wednesday social bowls had 56 players with the greens running beautifully (we are a very lucky club). We had nine 2 game winners. Third prize went to Alan Goudge and Peter “Wrong Bias” Wallace with +16. Second with a great score of +22 were Steve Gann and Margret Petty from Club Mulwala. But… they were pipped at the post by Robert “my bowls are not PINK” Lidgerwood and Benny Nowell with a +23.
Lucky numbers winners were Ian Morffew and Garry Hart. It was good to see Ian surface for the first time since his beloved Cats went down in the GF. On the other hand, “Niffty” Neville Coleman also made a comeback. Is it a coincidence that he’s back after Richmond’s victory? Jackpot was won by Snodger and Bob Brokenshire.
Last game of the day was between Anne Miles’ team and Ray Brown’s team. After Anne had given Ray a touch up, Ray then put the mat and jack away and when he got back was missing one bowl. After searching everywhere and accusing Anne of playing funny buggers, he then went to put his remaining bowls in his locker only to find the missing bowl (he forgot that we were playing 3 bowl pairs, not 2x4x2). When he got to his table for a drink with his playing partners a very embarrassed Ray had to tell the truth.
Please inform the match committee if you have to pull out of social bowls as early as possible so they can find a replacement, as it is a lot of work doing a redraw at the last minute.
On Saturday we had 12 rinks play a practice match against Corowa RSL Club at Corowa. We had some close games but the RSL came out on top.
On Sunday saw the O&M State fours being played at Wangaratta. Our men’s team of Jimmy LeFevre, dad Andy and Garry Sanders with a ring in from Wodonga Peter McClardy won their section and advance to play in the final against a Wangaratta team. Our ladies of Anne Miles, Claire Sanders, Laureen Smith and another ring in from Wodonga in World champ Kylie Whitehead is one of the few teams with having 2 wins and a lost. The next two remaining games will decide who will take the title and in one of the other teams YMGCR player Caroline Reilly was in the side that upset our team, so they are in the same position as our ladies. Good luck to all.
Next week we will have our first game of weekend and midweek pennant. For all our bowlers who are representing our club for the first time or the 200th time, please enjoy yourself and do our club proud. Don’t forget we are all out there to do our best and that also goes for the selectors, so give them all the support you can because the team is bigger than the individual. Thursday training will be followed up for both weekend and midweek teams with drinks out on the deck. Happy hour drink prices will be from 5 pm to 6 pm, so come along and enjoy our little get together and get the season off to a flyer.
