Mid – Week Pennant Report.
The A1s hosted Corowa Civic at the Golf Club in a game that many objective observers would have the A1s winning with a degree of comfort, but after the 63rd end of a hard fought match, it was Corowa Civic who prevailed by the narrowest of margins. The final score saw Corowa Civic winning 53 shots and 12 points to YMGCR 52 shots and 2 points. Securing 2 valuable points for the home side were Ian Febey (L), Shirley Hummel (2), Gary Presnell (3), and Ray Irvine (S), who won 19 shots to Corowa Civic 18 shots. The A1s are now in 6th place on the ladder and next week journey to Wangaratta.
The A2s played Wodonga at the Golf Club and in a closely contested game it was the A2s who prevailed, winning 59 shots and 11 points to Wodonga 52 shots and 3 points. Wining convincingly for the Golf Club were Sue Evans (L), Vicki Withers (2), Greg Fisher (3), and Kerry Kinnane (S), who won 25 shots to Wodonga 13 shots. Fighting hard all game and securing one point in a draw were Lynne Baxter (L), Peter Lidgerwood (2), Liliana Borwick (3), and Vic Brincat (S), 18 shots to Wodonga 18 shots. The A2s are in 4th place on the ladder and are a realistic shot at playing finals. Next week they travel to Wangaratta for what may be a season defining game.
Wednesday Social Bowls Report.
Last Wednesday saw 24 bowlers front up for Social Bowls, solid numbers considering the warmer weather we have been experiencing. Winners on the day were the team of Noel Millar and Sue Evans who shared the $80.00 first prize and a drink card each. The Runners Up prize was shared by the combo of Greg Fisher and Judy Leeson who shared $60.00. The Losing Rink consolation prize was won by Doug McTier and Frankie Lieberg who shared $20.00. The first Lucky Number prize of $20.00 was won by Les Balfour, and the second Lucky Number prize of $10.00 was won by Robyn Forge. Just a reminder that during the warmer weather Wednesday Social is starting at 10.00am. Single entries and visitors are always welcome. Could single entry and visiting players please provide a contact telephone number when placing their names on the entry sheets at the Bowls Office.
Weekend Pennant Report.
The A1s travelled to Wangaratta, for what in the past has not been an easy assignment. However, continuing their good form from last week, it was the A1s who walked away with the win. After the 84th end it was YMGCR 84 shots and 14 points to Wangaratta 69 shots and 4 points. Blazing a winning trail for the Golf Club were Chris Horne (L), Peter Lidgerwood (2), Anne Miles (3), and Ian Brimblecombe (S) who put Wangaratta to the sword 29 shots to Wangaratta 11shots. Starring for the A1s were the rink of Colin Withers (L), Shirley Hummel (2), Michael Vaughan (3), and Ray Irvine (S), who won 31 shots to Wangaratta. With other results not going our way the A1s are still in 6th place on the ladder, but the season does look secure. The A1s travel to Rutherglen next week in what will be a solid away test.
The A3s hosted Beechworth at the Golf Club and were convincingly beaten by the top side. Final scores YMGCR 56 and 3 points to Beechworth 79 shots and 15 points. Gaining 2 priceless points for the A3s were the rink of Doug McTier (L), Lynne Baxter (2), Bill Jenkins (3), and Vic Brincat (S), who won 19 shots to Beechworth 17 shots. The A3s are in 4th place on the ladder and are a realistic chance to make their mark in the finals. Next week they travel to Wodonga for what will be a real test.
The A5s entertained Wangaratta at the Golf Club and it was the visitors who won the day. Final scores saw Wangaratta win 55 shots and 12 points to YMGCR 49 shots and 2 points. Bucking the loss and winning in great style for YMGCR were Terry Baxter (L), Jodi Powell (2), Vicki Withers (3), and Ross Lloyd (S), who won 22 shots to Wangaratta 11 shots. The A5s are precariously placed in 7th place on the ladder and next week host Chiltern at the Golf Club.
Ladies and Men’s Single Finals Report.
A large crowd of spectators turned out last Friday afternoon to watch the finals of the Ladies and Men’s Singles Finals. The after match BBQ provided popular. The Ladies Final was contested by Laureen Smith and Anne Miles and after a hard fought tussle, which was played in good spirits it was Laureen Smith who prevailed 25 shots to Anne Miles 19 shots. Congratulations to Laureen who has made it two Grand Final wins in a row. Anne, well played and good luck next year.
The Men’s Final was played between Ian Brimblecombe and Jim LeFevre. In one of the great Grand Finals contested at the Golf Club, it was Ian Brimblecombe who won 25 shots to Jimmy 23 shots after a close measure on the final end. Congratulations Ian and well played Jimmy on what was a game that provided the crowd with thrill an end bowls.
