Wednesday Social Bowls Report.
Sunny skies and a temperature of around 16 degrees albeit accompanied by a variable and gusty wind was the order of the day for the 40 players who turned out for last week’s instalment of Wednesday Socal Bowls.
The flukey wind didn’t affect the gents from Katandra West, Merv Hannaford and Les Vann. They finished the day winning first prize of $90.00 and a drink card each. Merv and Les’ opponents on rink 6 were the team of Chris Horne and Ross Lloyd.
The runners up winning rink prize of $50.00 was shared by Greg Fisher and Craig Jordan who played the combo of Les Wilson and Mick Crawford on rink 5.
The losing rink consolation prize of $20.00 was won by Karen Guymer and Deb Rodgers, who played the visiting team of Bill Waldan and Graeme Whinray on rink 3.
The first Lucky Number raffle prize of $25.00 was won by Garry Seamer and the second Lucky Number raffle prize of $15.00 was won by Les Balfour.
Friday Social Bowls Report.
A temperature of 19 degrees and sunny skies greeted bowlers last Friday. However, unlike last Wednesday, the wind barely ruffled a feather or sent a bowl off course.
Using the fine conditions to their advantage was the team of Karen Guymer and Joe Borg, who played Sue Beca and Anita Burt on rink 6. Karen and Joe won $70.00 and a drink card each for their consistent bowls.
The winning rink runners up prize of $40.00 was won by the combo of Rhonda Irvine and Peter Verlardo. Rhonda and Peter’s opponents on rink 13 were Bruce Davie and Mick Crawford.
The losing rink consolation prize was won by Karen Guymer and Deb Rodgers, who played Garry Seamer and Chris Horne on rink 12. Karen and Deb won $20.00 as their prize for the afternoon.
The first Lucky Number raffle prize of $15.00 was won by Karen Guymer with her choice of number 37, indeed proving lucky. The second Lucky Number prize, also $15.00 was won by Col Withers with his selection of number 19.
Annual Practice Match – Yarrawonga versus Cobram.
The Golf Club was the venue for this year’s edition of the now traditional Yarrawonga v Cobram practice match.
The weather gods turned on a terrific day with the temperature nudging 21 degrees, sunny skies and virtually no wind to speak of. Add greens that were beautifully presented to the formula, and everything was set for a bumper day of bowls.
Both clubs fielded three sides of 16 players, and it was great to see both greens almost full. Conditions of play were games completed after 21 ends, or games finishing at 4.00pm if 21 ends weren’t completed.
At games finish at 4.00pm, the scores of all rinks were collated, and it was YMGCR who had won this year’s hit out convincingly.
All players then repaired to the clubhouse to enjoy a few drinks, swap a few yarns and the aftergame finger food. The gourmet pies sausage rolls, and other savouries hit the spot with all bowlers. After the speeches it was time for the raffles. The prizes were terrifically presented hampers which would have pleased anyone lucky enough to take one home.
This was another very successful YMGCR / Cobram interclub pre – season practice match; played in the best of spirit, it wasprobably one of the best yet. Our thanks go to the YMGCR and Cobram weekend selection panels for organising the sides. Sincere thanks are also in order to Ron and Jill Lamson for setting up the green side raffle station. Thanks also to Karen Bianco and Jill Lamson for arranging the raffle hampers. A special word of thanks again to Karen Bianco for organising the after-match savouries.
Vale Kurt Bleckhwehl. 1st September 1936 – 6th September 2026.
It is with sadness that YMGCR Bowls Section learnt of the passing of our long time, and esteemed member, Kurt Bleckwehl.
Kurt passed away on Sunday, the 6th of September, just days after Kurt, and his family had celebrated his 90th birthday, on Thursday the 1st of September.
Kurt was a member of YMGCR for around 50 years and over that time made a significant contribution to both the golf, and bowls sections.
Kurt and his wife, Marjie moved to the Yarrawonga / Mulwala area in the early 1960s, where they raised their family. Kurt and Marjie had a lovely home, by the lake, where they were long time and generous hosts for the YMGCR Christmas break ups.
A master bricklayer by trade; the conveniences around the golf course and the rectory, at St. Andrews Church are a lasting testimony to Kurt’s skill as a bricklayer.
Kurt was a keen sportsman, who, in addition to his love for golf and bowls, enjoyed water skiing and snow skiing. Kurt continued to enjoy playing social bowls until the last. In recent seasons Kurt’s social bowls partner was his grandson, Brad.
Kurt’s funeral was held at St. Andrews Anglican Church, last Thursday, the 10th of September at 11.00am. The service officiant was the Reverend Gemma Le Mesurier. Kurt’s grandchildren, and wife Marjie spoke beautifully about Kurt, his life, career, community achievements and his friends and family. The church was filled to overflowing, and many mourners made use of the outdoor seating. Those seated outside were blessed with fine weather for the service. The large number of mourners bore testimony to Kurt’s popularity and standing in the local community.
After the service, Kurt’s family attended a private burial for Kurt and later joined Kurt’s friends for refreshments at the Golf Club.
