YMGCR BOWLS CLUB
The A1’s made their way to Kiewa and it is traditionally a tough game on their fast synthetic green…. but the team prevailed and won 18/96 to 0/64. Michael Szabo ‘s rink starred with a fantastic win 24/9 with the whole team playing great bowls. Jimmy Lefevre rink also had a solid win. They won 22/16. Spencer’s rink played well but lost a couple of ends in the end but still won 28/22. Scott Widdison rink was always in control and it took the opposition skip to play some big bowls to save shots. They won 22/17. This was always a danger game and to come out with maximum points was a great result and puts them in a strong position going into the break….2nd on ladder.
The A2’s had an early start against Myrtleford at home starting at 10 am instead of at the normal start time (1 pm). We were well aware that we are not morning bowlers as we crashed to a 17/104 to 1/54 thumping. The only bright spot for the day was Laureen Smith’s rink who had a tight game all day and came out with an 18/18 draw (Sue Middleton had a blinder). Ray Brown was always around…BUT after a 10 shot turn around in one end (bloody wicks) they fought it out to the end and lost 18/21. In the final end Greg Green played 2 great bowls and we had 2 shots, both resting touchers and the opposition had 3rd shot being less than 1 mm away. Never seen that before. Robert Lidgerwood lost 15/34 and Cat lost 3/31. This has now put us out of the 4. We will now have to regroup like we did after the 1st game and show some ticker to get back into the 4.
The A4’s travelled to the slow greens of Swanpool and lost 2/62 to 16/87. Ian Morffew rink just keeps on winning and got the job done winning 18/17. Marie Whitehead rink also had a good day but just failed going down 16/20. Bob Evans was always in the contest but lost 17/23 and Ian Price lost 11/27.
B2’s had the bye.
Midweek Pennant had the A1’s play the local derby against Yarrawonga at home and won 14/69 to 0/44. Garry Sanders rink finally got a good start and was in total control all day and powered away to win 22/10. Les Spencer’s rink also got a good start but the Yarra team fought it out but went down 22/18. Anne Miles was in a tight contest all day and won 20/16 and they go into the break undefeated.
A2’s played Corowa Civic at home and in another tight game YMGCR flew home to just fail and lost 2/51 to 12/56. Marcia McGrillen rink once again had a good win 21/20, Stuart McNeill was always behind but fought the game out to lose 15/18 and Ray Brown was in the same situation and lost 15/18. They are still 2nd on the ladder and in a good position going into the break.
A3’s played Corowa Civic at home and lost 0/56 to 14/61. Danny McNeill lead all day and got piped on the last end and lost 14/15, Les Balfour also battled all day and lost 20/22 and Marie Whitehead rink also put in a brave performance to lose 20/24. They sit 3rd on the ladder and are well in the hunt for a flag.
B1’s played Club Mulwala at home and lost 2/45 to 12/71. Ross Lloyd rink had a good win getting the job done winning 22/17, Mary Essex was beaten 14/21 and Ian Morffew lost 9/33. They currently sit 5th on the ladder and still have a good chance of playing finals.
Last Thursday the finals of the O&M Over 60’s Singles were played at Chiltern and in the ladies section it was an all YMGCR final with Laureen Smith playing brilliant bowls to defeat Anne Miles and in the men’s section we had Garry Sanders defeat Peter McLarty (Wodonga). The O&M Over 60’s Men’s Pairs was also played and we had Les Spencer/Gary Pressnell get through to the semi finals and their opponents will be Garry Sanders/Peter McLarty. These results only go to show the quality of bowlers we have at our club.
On Thursday night we had our Christmas breakup and 60 people turned out on a fantastic night…. great venue, great food and plenty of drinks. Thanks go out to Ian & Marie Morffew and their merry bunch of helpers, Bob Brokenshire, John Millar, Cat, Vikki Withers and if I missed anyone else I apologise.
A bit of housekeeping…. on the 19th January the Ladies Club Singles Championship (Miles vs Smith) and the Men’s Club Singles Championship (A Lefevre vs S Widdison) will be played and will start at 4 pm.
Now for the last time this year is our “RINK OF THE WEEK” and the winners are going back to back…. well done Michael Szabo, Stuart McNeill, Wayne Lowrie and Micky Vaughan with a 24/9 victory at Kiewa.
Hope everyone has a safe and Merry Christmas. See you in the new year…and if I have offended anyone….sorry!!!
