YMGCR BOWLS CLUB
Weekend Pennant had the long awaited clash between top of the table Wangaratta and YMGCR at Wang. Unfortunately the result didn’t go our way and we lost 3/69 to 15/90. Best rink was Michael Szabo’s rink with a 18/15 win. The star was new boy Micky Vaughan who lead beautifully all day. Scotty Widdison rink showed a lot of courage to be 10 down at one stage and fought their way back for a well earned draw 21/21. Disco Davis got his first chance as skip and did well but for a few bad ends going down 16/25. Jimmy Lefevre went down 14/29, but we still sit 2nd on the ladder.
A2’s had a danger game against Mansfield at home and after our first round thrashing (losing by 60 shots at Mansfield), they were determined to make amends. And that they did winning 18/91 to 0/59. With a newly promoted skip in Rob Hummel and finally Ian Morffew getting a start as a second, the rink gelled instantly and was always in control to win 23/13. Cat’s rink was solid most of the day except for a few ends in the middle but they powered home to register a great win against Mansfield’s top player and they won 26/16. Brown’s rink started slowly but then Winderbank, Jenkins and Dousty lifted to get a win 21/12. Smithy was in the battle of the day and on the last end scores were level. The rink then put their heads down and came away with a 21/18 win. We are still 3rd on the ladder and only 2 points from 2nd, but with Mansfield sitting 5th and now 24 points behind, it gives us a bit of breathing space.
With a depleted side the A4’s had to travel to Tungamah and boy did they do us proud, winning 16/79 to 2/73. Doddy stepped up to skip this week and his side had a fantastic win 24/17. They were well supported by Bob Evans who in a tight game won 18/13 and Garry Hart who was also thrusted into the skipper’s job won 22/19. His side won the last 14 shots to take a great victory and Whitehead lost 15/24. This still keeps them in touch of the 4.
B2’s played top of the table side Chiltern at home and lost 1/43 to 13/77. Billy Butterworth rink was always in a tight game and came away with a well deserve draw 18/18, Pam Dodman rink lost 14/28 and Terry Matthews lost 11/31. It’s very hard in the B’s as every week the side can have massive changes due to players in other sides being unavailable and I’m sure if we could give them a more settled side they would win games.
Midweek Pennant saw the A1’s play across road rival Club Mulwala away and they played great bowls to beat us 3/45 to 11/50. They are a tough side to beat because last year they drew with us. Anne Miles continued on her winning way with a 17/12 win, Garry Sanders had a tight game all day and got a draw 15/15 and Spencer went down 13/23. This still keeps them on top.
A2’s played Wodonga at Wodonga and on a very slow green (11 seconds) YMGCR could not adjust and went down 0/47 to 14/78. Stuart McNeill lost 15/23, Bob Evans rink who was down 3/29 showed a lot of ticker clawing their way back to lose 17/30 and Brown’s rink lost 15/25. We are still 2nd on the ladder.
A3’s played Wodonga at home and lost 2/46 to 12/67. Danny McNeill rink dominated all day to win 21/10, Whitehead lost 16/26 and Balfour went down 9/31. They sit 5th on the ladder only half a game from 4th.
B1’s played Corowa Civic at home and won 12/67 to 2/51. Morffew’s rink had a good win 27/16, Judy Goudge rink had a good day and won 21/12 and Essex went down 19/23.
This week ‘s “RINK OF THE WEEK “goes to Danny McNeill, Gavin Borwick, Lillana Bowick and the smiling assassin Cecilia Milne.
