Wednesday Social Bowls.
Continuing fine weather and our free running greens saw a laudable turnout of 40 players last Wednesday the 29th of April for social bowls. Congratulations to first prize winners Sue Beca and Mick Crawford who shared $100.00 and a drink card each. The runners up prize of $90.00 was shared by the team of Doug McTier and Ian Skeeta Keat. The losing rink consolation prize of $50.00 was shared by the combo of Noel Millar and Fred Donaldson. The first Lucky Number prize of $20.00 was won by Barb Tennyson and the second Lucky Number prize of $10.00 was won by Ray Brown. Wednesday Social Bowls has undergone something of a renaissance over the last couple of years. We can all remember the days when Wednesday Social Bowls numbers were down to twelve players. The regeneration of Wednesday Social Bowls is, in the main, due to the innovation and hard work of Norm Windebank. Norm changed the format from single entry social bowls to nominated 3 bowl pairs. Norm also introduced a Lucky Number raffle, which has been an additional source of income for the Bowls Section. The increase in player numbers is testament to the popularity of the changes Norm has brought to Wednesday Social; the numbers, are now consistently between 36 and 40 players per week. Norm is taking a step back form chairing the Men’s Match Committee this year, however he will remain on the Match Committee. Thank you Norm for all your efforts over the last couple of years; particularly you work on Wednesday Social.
Friday Social Bowls.
Players are now back in the swing of Friday Social Bowls to the point where we had 44 players turnout last Friday. Games were played on both greens, and the orientation of play was north – south over both greens. The weather was the typical balmy autumn weather which is so conducive to great bowling. Rising to the occasion on rink 3 were the day’s winners Ray Brown and Ian Keat who won first prize of $160.00 The runners up prize of $100.00 was won by the team of Ray Butler and Cheryl who played on rink 8. The losing rink prize of $70.00 was shared by the team of Garry Seamer and Mick Crawford. The first Lucky Number prize of a drink card and $15.00 was won by Dave Charrington and the second Lucky Number prize of $10.00 was won Kerry Kinnane.
YMGCR Bowls Section Annual General Meeting.
The YMGCR Bowls Section held it’s Annual General Meeting at the Golf Club in the Willow Room last Sunday the 3rd of May at 3.00pm. Traditionally, the Bowls Section have held their AGMs on a Monday evening. In recognition that many don’t like driving of an evening the Bowls Committee decided to implement the change to Sunday afternoons in the interests of more members finding the time more amenable. There was a good turnout of members with more than enough members present to form a quorum. Having enough members present to form a quorum is always a concern for committees, and happily we met the required number. It was encouraging, and a good sign for the future that so many members nominated for committee positions. Those nominated for Bowls Committee positions and accepted by the members were: Bowls Section President – Kerry Kinnane. Bowls Section Vice President – Jill Lamson. Hon. Bowls Secretary – Julian Jones. Hon. Treasurer – Shirley Hummel. Assistant Secretary / Publicity Officer – Sue Beca. Ladies Match Committee Chairperson – Vicki Withers. Men’s Match Committee Chairperson – Chris Horne. Greens Director – Ray Irvine. General Committee Person – Karen Bianco. Lynne Baxter and Norm Windebank are retiring from the Bowls Committee after giving sterling service over a number of years. Thank you Lynne and Norm for all that you have done over the last few years. Happily, Lynne and Norm won’t be totally lost to committee life; Lynne is serving as Ladies Match Committee member and a Mid – Week Selector. Norm Windebank is staying on as a Men’s Match committee member. Next week we will introduce you to our Match Committee members and Weekend and Mid – Week Selectors. Until then, good bowling.
