YMGCR BOWLS CLUB

Wednesday social bowls had a field of 20 players and coming out on top to claim the big winner’s cheque were Ian Febey and Gavin Borwick with 2 wins and +24.  Runners up with 2 wins and +5 were Norm Windebank and Doug McTier.  Jackpot failed to go off.  The lucky number was won by Noel Millar.

Friday social bowls had 28 players and was won by Garry Presnell and Denise Trubiano.  Runners up were Greg Green and Andy Lefevre and the consolation prize went to Snodger and Bill Hidson.

We had the Region State Championship for men and women over at Moama starting on Friday through to Sunday.  In the men’s section we had Les Spencer, Garry Sanders, Micky Vaughan and Scott Widdison representing the O&M, but unfortunately the region finished 5th with 3 wins and 4 losses (they missed out on 3rd spot by shots difference)….still a great effort for YMGCR to have 4 out of the 12 players.

In the women’s section the girls got off to a good start winning the first game against Yarra Region with a 40/35 victory.  Anne Miles rink (Claire Sanders, Renee Hill, and Carol Fair) won 16/13.  They then lost the next game to Eastern Rangers going down 26/39.  Anne Miles rink lost 9/11 and so after the first day of competition they were in the middle of the ladder.

Saturday morning didn’t go to plan as they lost their first game 33/34 to Bendigo Campaspe and now, they were on the back foot as they couldn’t afford to lose any more games.  Round 4 saw a better showing against Sandbelt and they won 36/23.  Miles rink kept on their winning way 14/6, Mary Tragardh (Laureen Smith, daughter Rhoanna Smith and Peta Mattys) rink were also playing well winning 16/7 and Kylie Whitehead rink (Cheryl Lewis, Sue Middleton and Jodie Fruend) were playing well but couldn’t get a win. The last game for the day had the girls playing Strezlecki Region and they won 35/27.

On a cold Sunday morning the first game of the day would decide their fate.  They were playing last year’s champions in Northern Gateway and so far, the only undefeated team in the competition.  The matchup of the day saw a current Jackaroo (Whitehead) and a former Commonwealth Gold Medalist (Carla Krizanic) in a fantastic game.  The O&M rink went down 10/11, but they were well covered by Miles 13/9 and Tragardh 14/9.  They then won their last game against Goulburn Murray and only made the playoffs thanks to Northern Gateway losing their last game.

The championship final was against Bendigo Campaspe who beat them by a single shot in the round robin section, and after a slow start, the girls pulled away to record a great victory 41/21.  Whitehead rink who struggled over the 3 days rose to the occasion and recorded a win 13/8 (the rink they beat was the only unbeaten winner in the lady’s section).  Miles went on her winning way again to record a 10/8 win and Tragardh was also consistent winning 18/7.

Well done to your 8 O&M players as it just goes to show the quality of the players we have at our club.
