YMGCR BOWLS CLUB
WEDNESDAY SOCIAL BOWLS
20 bowlers enjoyed the late autumnal sunshine and each other’s company on Wednesday the 17th May. The weather was idyllic and all participants had a great day. In first place with 2 wins and plus 14 shots were Vic Brincat and Barb Tennyson. Runners up on the day were the team of Peter Barnes and Frank Lieberg with 2 wins and plus 9 shots. Frank is becoming something of a talisman when it comes to winning; here’s hoping the good form continues Frank. In 3rd place were the team of Tony Durkin and Kurt Bleckwell. The rolling jackpot went off at $70.00 with Greg Green and Doug McTier sharing the spoils. There is plenty of room for additional sides, so remember to put your names down on the sheets at the bowls office. The Wednesday format is three bowl pairs over two games of 12 ends at $10.00 per player this represents terrific value. Come along and enjoy great bowls and good company, not to mention the great weather.
SATURDAY AND MID-WEEK PENNANT
Name sheets for both Saturday and Mid-Week pennant are now up at the bowls office. Could bowlers intending to play pennant this upcoming 2023 / 2024 season put your names on the sheets promptly. This will allow the Match Committee and Selectors to determine nice and early how many sides we will be entering in both competitions.
FRIDAY SOCIAL BOWLS.
24 players enjoyed the free running East green on Friday the 19th of May. Everyone appeared to have a great time. The winners were Mal Beer and Hans Lang. Mal has transferred back to YMGCR from Cobram; welcome back Mal. Runners up on the day were Greg Green and Ray Brown. The consolation prize went to David Haybeck and Anthony Clota from Tungamah Bowling Club. As I mentioned earlier in the Wednesday Social Report, there is plenty of room for additional sides, so remember to put your names down on the Friday name sheets at the bowls office. The Friday format is 2 – 4- 2 pairs over one game of 18 ends and at $10.00 per player this represents great value. Come along and enjoy great bowls and good company. After the game everyone repairs to the Club House for the presentations where some tall stories are told, a few laughs and one, or two, convivials are shared. Please do come along.
OVENS AND MURRAY GROUP SIDE REPORT.
The Ovens and Murray Group Side played a friendly match against the Goulburn Marray Group Side at Shepparton East Bowling Club on Saturday the 13th of May. The format was fours play for both men and the ladies sides comprising four rinks of four players.
YMGCR had 9 players representing the Ovens and Murray. Of a total of 32 players this is a remarkable achievement. YMGCR players were: Les Spencer, Michael Vaughan, Scott Widdeson, Garry Sanders, Shirley Hummel, Claire Sanders, Anne Miles, Laureen Smith and Sue Middleton.
The greens were running at approximately 14 seconds and 18 seconds so bowlers had to be prepared to adapt to the differing speeds when moving between greens for their matches. Both the mens and ladies sides played three games over the day. The men won one game and lost two in a close contest. The ladies also won one game and lost two. When the shots were totalled up the scores were dead even at the end of the six games.
The Ovens and Murray Regional Side will now go onto play at Moama in the Regional Sides Championship. The O&M Side to contest the Championship will comprise three rinks of four players for both the ladies and men, a total of twenty-four players. Eight players who participated at Shepparton East will miss out so here’s hoping all YMGCR players make the O&M side. The event will be held on the 26th, 27th and 28th of May. Both the O&M men and ladies sides play the Yarra Region in their first game. The YMGCR players representing the O&M would welcome your support on one, two, or all of the three days. Get along and watch some topflight bowls and support our players.
