Australian Open.

YMGCR have several bowlers playing at this year’s Australian Open which is being held on Queensland’s Gold Coast. Those playing include Anne Miles, Laureen Smith, Claire and Garry Sanders and Gary Presnell. Good luck to those YMGCR players. We will report on their progress next week.

Vale Bill Dicks.

It is with sadness that we learnt of the passing of long standing and esteemed bowling member of YMGCR William (Bill) Dicks at the age of 92. Born on the 16th of September 1930, Bill was an accomplished sportsman who played 9 games for the St. Kilda Football Club in the then VFL, from 1950 to 1952. By today’s standards Bill was not an overly big player standing at 173 cm (5ft 8in) and weighing 71 kg (157lb). Leaving St. Kilda at the end of 1952 Bill moved to Corowa Football Club for the 1953 season. 1954 was a standout season for Bill when he won Corowa’s Best and Fairest Award and was runner up in the Ovens and Murray Football League best and fairest award, the Morris Medal. Bill polled 17 votes and was just shaded by Benalla half forward Kevin Hurley, who polled 19 votes. Bill crossed to Yarrawonga Football club in 1955 as captain / coach. In Bill’s first season at the Pigeons Yarrawonga narrowly lost the O&M the Preliminary Final to Wangaratta Magpies, played at Rutherglen, where the final score had the Magpies 15.13 to the Pigeons 12.12. Bill was among Yarrawonga’s best players on the day. Amazingly the Pigeons and the Magpies had played out a hard fought draw in the Preliminary Final the week before. In the Grand Final Wangaratta went to be beaten by North Albury 13.15 – 93 to 13.5 – 83

Bill was an accomplished, extremely popular, long time and valued bowler at YMGCR where he won the Men’s Singles Championship in the 1989 / 1990 season. Also, in 1989 / 1990 Bill won the Mixed Pairs with his wife Audrey. During his time at YMGCR Bill made outstanding contributions on both the match and tournament committees.

Bill passed away peacefully at Yarrawonga Hospital on the 13th of June 2023. YMGCR Bowls extend our deep sympathy to Bill’s family.
