YMGCR BOWLS CLUB
Mid – Week Pennant Finals.
After having played Moira in the last home and away game of the season, the A2’s found themselves in déjà vu land, playing Moira in their first final at the Wangaratta Bowls Club. In a tensely fought game after the 63rd end scores were level; this meant each rink had to play an extra end to break the deadlock. After the extra ends were played YMGCR came agonisingly close to winning, but unfortunately went down to Moira by the narrowest of margins: one solitary shot. After 66 ends the final scores saw Moira 58 shots and 12 points to YMGCR 57 shots and 2 points. Rising ably to the challenge of playing finals were Chris Horne (L), Vicki Withers (2), Marcia McGrillen (3), and Allan Goudge (S), who accounted for the opposition 24 shots to Moira’s 16 shots. Congratulations to all who represented YMGCR in this final, they were Chris Horne, Vicki Withers, Marcia McGrillen, Allan Goudge, Lynne Baxter, Tony Durkin, Pam Dodman, Doddy Dodman, Cliff Morton, Cathy Spinks, Liliana Borwick and Danny McNeill. Sincere thanks to those YMGCR fans who watched the game and gave their utmost support to the A2’s. While this is no doubt a frustrating result, the A2’s had a season of which they can be justifiably proud. Well done A2’s.
Wednesday Social Bowls.
16 players enjoyed the warm conditions on Wednesday the 21st of February for Wednesday Social Bowls. The format was 2 games of three bowl pairs. The winners were two visitors from Broadford, Kevin Innes (S), and Rob Lockwood (L), who won their two games and finished with plus 20 shots. Runners up were Bob Fiddes (S), and Neville Coleman (L), who won both their games with plus 12 shots. The Lucky Number was won by Norm Windebank. The Rolling Jackpot finally went off and was won by Gavin Borwick and Kurt Bleckwehl; well done gents. As the Bernie Bott Tournament is being held this week there will be no Social Bowls on Wednesday the 28th of February.
Weekend Pennant.
The A1’s travelled to Rutherglen Bowling Club last Saturday the 24th of February to play Corowa RSL in a sudden death final. The scenarios were, win and play Wodonga in the Grand Final, lose and find themselves knocked out of the finals. After an entertaining, and close game it was YMGCR who came out winners; YMGCR 71 shots and 14 points to Corowa RSL 57 shots and 4 points. Leading the way and winning in a canter, were Laureen Smith (L), Ray Irvine (2), Rod Jones (3), and Troy Williams (S), who accounted for their opponents 23 shots to 11 shots. Also winning well for YMGCR was the rink of Ian Febey (L), Michael Vaughan (2), Andy Lefevre (3), and Jim Lefevre (S), who won 19 shots to 13 shots. A word of appreciation to Corowa RSL who had a terrific season and played the final in a tough, but sportsman like manner. Thanks to all YMGCR fans who made the trip to Rutherglen and gave such great support to the A1’s. Thank you again to the bus drivers, Les Balfour and Ray Brown. The Grand Final will be played next Saturday the 2nd of March, at Corowa Civic Bowling Club, commencing at 1.00 pm. We’d like to see as many YMGCR fans there as possible for what should be a great game. Until next week, good bowling.
