YMGCR BOWLS CLUB
Mid-Week Pennant.
For the A1’s it was the last game of the year that was a home game, that wasn’t a home game. Due to the new heat rules that have been implemented by YMGCR, where both golf and bowls sanctioned events, played at the Golf Club, are cancelled where the predicted temperature for the day of play is 38 degrees or more the A1’s had a reschedule of venue to Yarrawonga Bowls Club. It was a must win game for the A1’s against Kiewa; lose and relegation could be staring them in the face or win and a chance to play finals could be in the equation. The game was played on Yarrawonga’s front green and it was a clean sweep for YMGCR. Final scores; YMGCR 65 shots and 14 points to Kiewa 39 shots and 0 points. After the game YMGCR players were scratching heads asking themselves, ‘why weren’t we playing like this in previous games?’ After the last bowl was delivered the A1’s finished the season in 6th place, safe in A1 for next year yes, but finals this year, no. Winning in fine style for YMGCR was the rink of Rhonda Irvine (L), Ray Brown (2), Greg Green (3), and Julian Jones (S), who accounted for their opponents 25 shots to 11 shots. Our sincere thanks go to Yarrawonga Bowls Club who played host with such generosity at short notice.
The A2’s were hosted by Moira Bowls Club and it was the home side who won the day. Moira 66 shots and 10 points to YMGCR 59 shots and 4 points. Winning well for YMGCR were Cliff Morton (L), Cathy Spinks (2), Liliana Borwick (3), and Danny McNeill (S), who won 25 shots to Moira 18 shots. Despite this eve of finals loss, the A2’s finished the home and away season in 4th place and on Tuesday the 20th of February they play an elimination final against Moira at Wangaratta Bowls Club, commencing at 10.00 am. Good luck all playing in this game.
The A3’s journeyed to Dederang for the last game of the season and it was the home side who won in style; Dederang 73 shots and 12 points to YMGCR 43 shots and 2 points. Winning with a consistency that they have shown in recent weeks were Marie Morffew (L), Jill Lamson (2), Tony Durkin (3), and Ian Morffew (S), 21 shots to Dederang 19 shots. The A3’s finish the season in 7th place.
Wednesday Social Bowls.
Wednesday the 14th of February saw 16 players front up for 2 games of 3 bowl pairs. All games were played on the east green. Winning with a leg in the air were Kurt Bleckwehl (L), and Bob Fiddes (S), who won both their games with a total of plus 17 shots. Runners up, on the day, were Neville Coleman (L), and Liliana Borwick (S), who won both games with plus 7 shots. The Luck Number was won by Kerry Kinnane, and the Rolling Jackpot still stands at that very tempting $200.00 for this week’s game.
Weekend Pennant.
YMGCR have the A1’s participating in finals this year, and after the A1’s finished the year in 2nd place on the ladder they were scheduled to meet Wodonga in a Qualifying Final at Rutherglen. In an entertaining, but disappointing game for YMGCR, the final scores saw Wodonga win 94 shots and 14 points to YMGCR 81 shots and 4 points. Winning for YMGCR, with a consistency that they have been displaying since before Christmas were the rink of Gary Presnell (L), Wayne Lowrie (2), Anne Miles (3), and Ian Brimblecombe (S), who won 23 shots to Wodonga 20 shots. Also giving YMGCR supporters a reason to cheer were the rink of Ian Febey (L), Michael Vaughan (2), Andy Lefevre (3), and Jim Lefevre (S), who won 22 shots to Wodonga 21 shots. Thank you to all YMGCR supporters who came along. Many thanks also to our volunteer bus drivers, Les Balfour driving the team bus and Ray Brown who drove the supporter’s bus. The A1’s now face a knockout Preliminary Final against Corowa RSL next Saturday again at Rutherglen Bowling Club commencing at 1.00 pm. Until next week, good bowling.
