Midweek Pennant had the A1’s play Wodonga at Corowa Civic in the Qualifying Final and in a tight contest all day, Wodonga taking an early lead only to have YMGCR fight back to win 49/42 and now they have booked a spot in the GF in 2 week’s time.
The Miles train just keeps rolling along and our super rink which has not lost a game all year, did so again winning 21/8. Siggi lead beautifully and was always around the mark and Robyn Moore also giving great support which gave the rink a solid launching pad. Not to be out done Petro Valardo was steady as a rock and then the champ (Milesy) was also at her brilliant best playing great bowls after another.
After a slow start Smithy was 0/5 down, but then “Colonel” Claire Sanders started to find her range and began to put bowls in the head. With Pricey and Snodger also getting involved and with Smithy playing some good bowls they pulled the lead back and after 12 ends they were level on 8/8. For the next 4 ends with tight heads, only single shots were scored and when YMGCR got a 3, they moved to lead 13/11. Wodonga came back to win the last 3 ends to win 16/13.
“GG” Green rink drew their top skip and after 3 ends were 3/0 down. YMGCR then picked up a couple of 2’s and were back in the game to then lead 5/4 after 7 ends with “GG” going shot for shot with the Wodonga skip, but Wodonga then got out to a 6 shot lead after 12 ends. With Rhonda Irvine and Sue Middleton starting to take control, the game then changed when the jack was moved and we were holding 4 shots. The Wodonga skip missed with both his bowls and GG then put another 2 in to make it a 6 and tie the game back up again. After Wodonga picked up a few ends to win 18/15, all eyes were on the main score board and we were determined not to drop any big numbers. We will now be waiting to see who we play Benalla or Wodonga.
We would like to thank our team manager Judy Wenzel and the greatest bus driver in the club …. Les Balfour and thanks to our loyal supporters who made the effort to come along and cheer us on and I hope more will come to the GF.
Wednesday Social Bowls had 24 players and the winners with 2 wins and a massive score of +29 were Les Wilson and going back to back with the drink card was Les Balfour. Well these two guys must be the most unluckiest runners up EVER with 2 wins and a +28 were Peter Lidgerwood and new bowler Chris Horne.
Our Weekend Pennant A1’s side travelled to Corowa Civic to play Wodonga in the Preliminary Final and after taking an early lead the Wodonga team rallied late to win 82/75. Best rink was Ray “Sugar” Irvine who won 25/23, after jumping out of the blocks to lead 8/0 after 4 ends, the Wodonga rink pulled themselves back in the game. Then Sugar got the momentum back to kick clear again, but once again they fought their way back going down by 2.
Junior LeFevre rink also got a good start to have a handy lead, but Wodonga won the next 5 ends to lead 8/4, but the boys never gave in and came back to just go down 14/15.
Szab’s rink held a 2 shot lead after 9 ends and was in a tight contest all day and on the last end were holding 2 shots, but we were 6 shots down overall and so he killed the end to give us a chance of victory (it was a big ask but he still gave it a go), they went down 20/23.
Cabbage Spencers rink was up against one of the top skips in the comp, (Mason Bayliss) and it proved to be a wonderful contest between two of the best skips in the O&M. It was a tight game with Spencer getting out to a 13/6 lead after 11 ends, but with Wodonga winning the next 3 ends to make the difference 1 shot. Both skippers were putting on a clinic and were playing one great bowl after another. The big moment of the game was when YMGCR were holding shot and the Wodonga skip sat it out and then with his last bowl trailed the jack back for 4. Then on the final end we were holding 5 shots and with his last bowl he sneaked around a short bowl (by millimetres) and drew the shot to put the nail in the coffin and out of the finals and losing 16/21.
Once again we would like to thank Les Balfour for driving us and to all our teammates for coming to support us and lastly to the team …. we put up a brave fight and we are not far off the mark, so let’s stick fat and do it next year.
On Friday we had the final of the Mixed Pairs and it was a very high standard game and it all came down to the last end with Marie Whitehead and Wazza Henderson beating Robyn Moore and Bob Evans 14/13. In a fantastic game it was all tied up on 13/13 all, with 1 end to play, then Robyn played her second bowl to within a couple of inches, but to Marie’s credit she followed it up to nudge her out and take the shot and the championship. Well done to the 4 bowlers for an outstanding and entertaining contest.
Don’t forget …. Breakup and Presentation day on Sunday the 28th March starting at 12:00, all pennant players welcome (and partners). Put your name down on list for catering purposes.
