YMGCR BOWLS CLUB
Wednesday social bowls had a field of 18 players, and we had 3 two game winners. With a score of +20, Shane Maddox and Chris Horne got the big prize and second went to Gary Presnell and Gavin Borwick.
Friday social bowls had a great field of 44 players. This week’s winners were Ian Morffew and Bob Evans. Runners up were Ron and Jill Lamson and the consolation prize went to Billy Butterworth and Chris Horne.
On a cold Sunday morning the final of the Men’s Pairs between Andy and Jimmy Lefevre and Les Spencer and Gary Presnell was decided. It was a shame that only a hand full of spectators were present as it turned out to be one of the all-time classics. Both teams were going head-to-head with great bowls being played by all 4 players, and after 6 ends the scores were level at 6 apiece. Spencer/Presnell then jumped out to a 6 shot lead after scoring a 5 and followed up with another 2 to lead 13/7 after 9 ends. Then on the 10th end with Spencer holding shot, young Jimmy played a brilliant shot to trail the jack back for 3 to tighten the game back up again, but once again the Spencer combination then picked up another 5 to lead 18/11 after 12 ends. Then the Lefevres won the next end and changed the length and went short, and it was looking good when they held a hand full, until a Spencer special drew 2nd shot. The Lefevres kept the short ends going and picked up a 4, and after 16 ends the scores were level again at 16 each. On the 17th end with Jimmy and Andy putting down 4 great bowls, it took another Spencer special to trail the jack back for 2 and take the lead back going into the last end. On the last end with Spencer holding 4 good shots, Jimmy Lefevre played a magnificent drive to kill the end. Then on the following end, Andy played a beautiful bowl to hold shot and with both skippers having 2 bowls left, second shot was in dispute. Spencer then played his last bowl and knocked up a Lefevre bowl and still we did not know if the scores were level or if the Lefevres were holding game. Jimmy played his last bowl, but it was short, and when it came to a measure the Lefevres got 2 to tie the game and we had to go to an extra end.
Andy won the toss and gave the mat away. He then put his first 2 bowls on the jack to hold the advantage. Spencer didn’t do anything, and Jimmy then put 2 more in the count. Gary and Andy didn’t change anything, and it all came down to the skips. The Lefevres held advantage, and then big Les stepped onto the mat and played the bowl of the game as he trailed the jack back for shot and the game as Jim couldn’t change the head. It was a shame that we had to have a loser, but the 4 players all bowled magnificently in the tough conditions as the wind was playing havoc.
Sadly, this will be my last report as Julian Jones will be taking over, so if you have any newsworthy news, please let him know.
