YMGCR BOWLS CLUB
Mid – Week Pennant.
YMGCR’s A1 side played host to Wangaratta and there was nothing Christmassy about the result for the home side: YMGCR 51 shots and 0 points to Wangaratta 72 shots and 14 points. This result leaves the A1’s season well and truly on the line as they find themselves going into the Christmas break on 32 points in 7th place, just 7 points above the bottom side, Myrtleford. An honourable mention must go to Rhonda Irvine (L), Greg Green (2), Laureen Smith (3) and Allan Goudge (S), who pushed their opponents all day but narrowly went down 19 shots to 23 shots.
The A2 side travelled to Benalla and would have enjoyed the trip home after beating Benalla 56 shots and 12 points to Benalla 48 shots and 2 points. Winning well for YMGCR, and in fact doubling their opponents tally were the rink of Cliff Morton (L), Cathy Spinks (2), Liliana Borwick (3), and Danny McNeill who beat their opponents comfortably 24 shots to 12 shots. This result finds the A2’s in 4th place on the ladder with 58 points; nicely poised for a tilt at the finals, but with no room for complacency or error.
Benalla hosted our A3 side and won narrowly: Benalla 50 shots and 12 points to YMGCR 46 shots and 2 points. Taking home 2 points for Christmas, and winning well, was the rink of Marie Morffew (L), Jodi Powell (2), Chris Horne (3), and Ian Morffew (S), who beat their opponents 18 shots to 9 shots. The A3’s are in 6th place after this result and if they string a few wins together after the Christmas spell they could play finals.
Weekend Pennant.
YMGCR’s A1 side were entertained by Corowa RSL and after the 84th end it was the RSL side who prevailed: 81 shots and 14 points to YMGCR 71 shots and 4 points. Winning well, as they have been in recent weeks, were Gary Presnell (L), Colin Withers (2), Anne Miles (3), and Ian Brimblecombe (S), who scored 21 shots to their opponents 16 shots. The A1’s have slipped to 2nd place on the ladder with 134 points. Hopefully the new year can see them regain top place and secure a double chance for the finals.
Benalla played host to our A2 side and it was YMGCR who won the day: YMGCR 75 shots and 14 points to Benalla 64 shots and 4 points. The A2’s find themselves in 5th place on the ladder with 73 points going into the festive season break and, if they continue to win after Christmas, finals are not out of the question. Winning in fine style were Doug Wheeler (L), Peter Lidgerwood (2), Kerry Kinnane (3), and Rob Lidgerwood (S) 29 shots to Benalla 16 shots.
The A4’s entertained Yackandandah and were in no mood to extend the compliments of the season to the visitors. YMGCR in a clean sweep won 108 shots and 18 points to Yackandandah 47 shots and 0 points. Relishing the home conditions were Marie Morffew (L), Mary Essex (2), Chris Horne (3), and Ian Morffew (S) who won 31 shots to 5 shots. The A4 side are in 4th place on the ladder with 100 points, and if they continue to win after Christmas will almost certainly play finals.
The B2 side were at home to Wodonga but couldn’t take advantage of playing on the home track, going down narrowly 51 shots and 2 points to Wodonga 58 shots and 12 points. Placing a valuable 2 points under the Christmas tree for YMGCR were Jodi Powell (L), Frankie Liberg (2), Les Wilson (3) and Bill Butterworth (S), beating their opposition 19 shots to 12 shots. This will be our last press report for 2023, we’ll resume reporting in the week preceding the re – commencement of pennant. To all bowlers and readers of the Chronicle; have a happy, safe and peaceful Christmas. Until next time, good bowling.
