Weekly Report January 21

YMGCR BOWLS CLUB

Mid – Week Pennant.

YMGCR’s A1 side resumed a week before the rest of the A1 sides as they had to play a catch-up game against Myrtleford. This was a Round 1 game that was postponed due to the number of YMGCR and Myrtleford players away on State duties in early October. Unfortunately for YMGCR they couldn’t take advantage of the home ground and it was Myrtleford who secured the win, and, it has to be said it was a comfortable win for Myrtleford. Final scores; YMGCR 50 shots and 3 points to Myrtleford ,70 shots and 11 points. Winning well for YMGCR were the rink of Ian Febey (L), Shirley Hummel (2), Rob Hummel (3) and Ray Irvine (S), who scored 21 points to their opponents 16 shots.

Weekend Pennant.

It was a top of table contest held at YMGCR between YMGCR’s A1 side, in second place, and Wodonga who were top of the table. And befitting a top of table clash the standard of bowls was extremely high with tight heads across all rinks. Wodonga have been something of a nemesis for YMGCR in recent seasons, so for YMGCR the win was all the sweeter. Final scores; YMGCR 77 shots and 16 points to Wodonga 66 shots and 2 points. Leading the way all day was the rink of Laureen Smith (L), Ray Irvine (2), Bob Fiddes (3), and Troy Williams (S) who won 24 shots to Wodonga 16 shots. This win finds YMGCR consolidate 2nd place on the ladder.

Our A2 side played host to Corowa Civic and in a tight tussle it was Civic who claimed the overall win; YMGCR 70 shots and 4 points to Corowa Civic 74 shots and 14 points. Despite the overall loss, the rink of Norm Windebank (L), Mal Beer (2), Vic Brincat (3), and Neil Loveridge won in style 21 shots to their opponents 13 shots.

The A4’s made the trek to Benalla and it was an agonisingly close loss for YMGCR, going down by a solitary shot; YMGCR 68 shots and 4 points to Benalla 69 shots and 14 points. Winning well for YMGCR was the rink of Marie Morffew (L), Mary Essex (2), Ian Morffew (3), and Bob Evans (S), who made short work of their opponents 19 shots to Benalla 11 shots.

Our B2 side entertained Corowa Civic and it was a Civic side on a mission, with the final scores; Corowa Civic 84 shots and 13 points to YMGCR 45 shots and 1 point. An honourable mention has to go to the rink of Jill Lamson (L), Jodi Powell (2), Les Wilson (3), and Bill Butterworth (S) who fought out a draw against their opponents 21 shots each. This rink draw secured a valuable point for the B2’s.

Ladies Pairs Championship Final.

Last week saw the Ladies Pairs final fought out by Shirley Hummel (L), and Anne Miles (S), playing Rhonda Irvine (L), and Laureen Smith (S). The game was a close tussle with rarely more than a shot or two separating the sides. After the 5th end it Anne and Shirley on 6 shots to Laureen and Rhonda on 5 shots. Anne and Shirley won the next few ends, but on the 8th end Laureen played a lovely weighted shot to pick up two shots, with the score now Anne, Shirley on 8 shots and Laureen, Rhonda on 7 shots. Over the next three ends Anne and Shirley managed to pull away to lead by three shots, Anne, Shirley 11 shots to Laureen and Rhonda 8 shots. On the 14th end Anne played an educated weighted shot to bring the score to 13 shots Anne and Shirley with Laureen and Rhonda on 9 shots. With only one end to play it looked like it was Anne’s and Shirley’s match to lose. Laureen and Rhonda, determined to the last, played some terrific bowls on the 15th end picking up 3 shots to go down by the closest of margins, final scores Anne Miles and Shirley Hummel 13 shots to Laureen Smith and Rhonda Irvine 12 shots. Congratulations to our new champions and well played Laureen and Rhonda.

Men’s 21 Handicap Final.

The Men’s 21 Handicap Final was played last week between two really worthy finalists Garry Sanders and Wayne Lowrie. Garry was playing on a handicap of -9 shots and Wayne on a handicap of -6 shots. It took the boys 13 ends to finally work off the handicaps with scores Garry 9 shots to Wayne on 1 shot. The bowls were of a high standard and with Wayne playing some superb draw shots Garry had to play a series of classy and well considered conversion shots to win the day, with the final scores Garry Sanders 21 shots to Wayne Lowrie 12 shots. Congratulations to both Wayne and Garry for putting on a first class display. Until next week, good bowling.
